The most effective way to clean carpets is the hot water extraction method.  In this method, hot water together with cleaning solution is forced through the carpet with the use of pressurized equipment.  The pressurized hot water easily breaks down the dirt, soil and other contaminants.  Hot water together with all the dirt and contaminants is suspended in the water and then is extracted by an industrial vacuum.   Portable steam cleaners work just the same way, except that it offers less power than its big industrial counterpart does and proportionately it is much cheaper.  This is suitable for households or offices where they do cleaning. 

It is light in weight and deep cleaning.  Due to the high temperature of steam, it can disinfect the carpets and upholstery as it cleans.  The extreme heat would kill parasitic insects and certain types of disease causing bacteria.  We could benefit from this when the portable steam cleaner is used to clean the pet beddings, pillowcases, etc.

There are various types available, upright, canister, and hand-held. Accessories are available for easy access of hard to reach corners and places in upholstery.  Additional features of certain models include automatic cable winder with a touch of a button, equipment brush holder, and four wheels for stability when moving, audible signal, or lamp to indicate when water is finished.  Safety features like a pressure gauge, safety valve separate from the safety cap, ergonomically designed handle. There are portable steam cleaners especially designed for cleaning of weapons, auto parts, electronic parts, printed circuit boards, and other gear.  Steam attains temperatures of 500 degrees Fahrenheit and flows through a nozzle with pressures of about 200 psi. The surfaces for cleaning are heated by the steam at very high temperatures, long enough to melt oil, dirt, or grease.  Left over dirt is washed away with condensate from the steam.  This steam cleaner replaces cleaning by use of solvent and has many advantages like lower costs.  Cleaning solvents are most of the time toxic; hence, it presents harm to people who do the cleaning and disposal of such poses risks for the environment.

Savings on waste disposal is also realized.  It is also a faster method of cleaning.  Thus, it saves on labor costs.  The equipment is low maintenance because of its simple design.  From a safety standpoint, only goggles and gloves are required for operators.  When using solvents, aside from the goggles and gloves, masks, and sleeves or elbow length gloves must be used. Portable steam cleaners also has its disadvantages, it cannot be used for equipment that is moisture sensitive. Additives could be used for equipments with rusting issues.  Condensate also has a tendency to damage joints, bonds and seals.  If this is the case hot air blowers can be used to eliminate left over moisture.
