Hardwood Floor Cleaning

Hardwood floor cleaning is important to the durability of your floors. Like any type of flooring, if they are not maintained they will deteriorate much quicker. However, they are not difficult to look after. Here are some basic tips to keep your hardwood floors looking beautiful:   

• Sweep frequently with soft bristled broom
• Vacuum with soft brush a couple of times a week
• In high traffic areas consider placing carpet runners to reduce wear and tear
• Vacuum runners frequently
• Mop spills immediately as liquids and wood floors do not mix
• Avoid wearing high heels on floors
• Do not drag heavy objects across floor
• At each entrance there should be floor mats to prevent dirt and grit from getting tracked across the floor as best as possible
• All furniture should have pads under each leg

If you have a new floor installed, find out the hardwood floor cleaning and maintenance tips from the manufacturer or installer. Hardwood is finished with different products. These products include:

·        Wax

·        Varnish

·        Polyurethane

Regardless of the finish, any liquid spill must be wiped up immediately. Liquids can damage the floor’s finish and also can seep between the floorboards and might cause the boards to warp.

Hardwood floor cleaning also includes removing stains. Wood floor cleaners are required to help with the removal. After applying the cleaner, rinse with vinegar and water solution. Once the section has dried, the area is sanded with a fine grade paper until there is no stain left. Re-apply the finish as necessary.

Hardwood floor cleaning also involves removing any grease and dirt that has accumulated over time. This is done by using a neutral pH cleaning solution specifically for wood floors. If you use a cleaner that is not pH neutral then you will need to rinse it with a quarter cup of vinegar and a gallon of water.  This solution will remove any cleaner residue left on the floor. Never use ammonia based cleaners on wood flooring, as it will dull the finish.
